There are so many different personality types and I won't begin to try to name them all. Some of us puff ourselves up to be the greatest at this or that while others of us have low self esteem and degrade ourselves to a point that we don't deserve. Both extremes can irritate or push people away. Most of us lay somewhere in the middle.
It is important to recognize our strengths and God-given talents and abilities. He has equipped us with gifts that he wants us to use for his glory, not our own. When we toot our own horn it really serves no useful purpose other than to call attention to ourselves.
A compliment sounds so much better coming from someone else. Proverbs 27:2 (NLT) says, "Let someone else praise you, not your own mouth - a stranger, not your own lips." There is such wisdom in that proverb. No one likes to be around an arrogant and boastful person!
Conversely, people who are constantly negative about themselves and everything around them can drag you down with them. God created us all and he does not like us to say negative things about any of his created ones. Jeremiah 1:5a says, "I knew you before I formed you in your mother's womb." That's right! He knew you before you were even formed in your mother's womb!
God neither wants us to exalt ourselves nor degrade ourselves. Let's honor him and use our talents for his glory!
John 3:30 (NLT) - "He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less."
