Sometimes when I am watching a movie that I have seen several times before, I often want certain scenes to happen differently because I do not like what I know is about to happen. Obviously, it happens the same way every time. The same thing happens when I read about the crucifixion in the Bible. I ask myself the "what if" question.
What if Jesus decided, "I've had enough with these sinners! I'm going to set aside my humanity and take back my power as God!" What if the jagged bones and metal shards attached to the cat of nine tails bounced off of Jesus' skin as the soldiers whipped him? What if the nails bent as they tried to hammer them into his hands and feet?
I can imagine Jesus rolling his eyes as they settle for tying him to the cross and raise him up and begin mocking him. After getting bored of this, Jesus finally snaps free from the bindings and jumps to the ground. One clap of his hands and the soldiers fall to the ground in worship of him.
Great superhero story, right? The only problem with that is that there would be no shedding of blood and no sacrifice for our sins. We would still be under the old Mosaic law and limited by our human weaknesses. Because of Jesus' sacrifice we are no longer slaves to sin. We have direct access to the Father through the Son!
Romans 8:3 (TPT) - "For God achieved what the law was unable to accomplish, because the law was limited by the weakness of human nature. Yet God sent us his Son in human form to identify with human weakness. Clothed with humanity, God's Son gave his body to be the sin offering so that God could once and for all condemn the guilt and power of sin."
