Uncommon Valor Was a Common Virtue

These powerful and sobering words are inscribed on the base of the US Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. The memorial depicts the iconic scene of the flag raising on Iwo Jima in 1945. It was a crucial and deadly part of our nation’s island-hopping campaign as we headed toward the end of World War II.

War is a terrible and tragic thing, even when necessary. Most of us have either served in the military or know ones who have served. This weekend, we honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives for our country. Memorial Day is a time to pause and reflect, to remember the fallen, and pray for their families.

This is always a special weekend to me, since I served in the Marine Corps. The memorial in Arlington always gives me chills when I see it. I stand a little taller and prouder when I walk by it. The ties that bind me with my Marine Corps brethren remain strong. I’m proud to have served and proud of those who still serve. My prayers go out to the families and loved ones of those who didn’t make it home. Uncommon valor was a common virtue!

John 15:13 (NLT) - “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
