Kick the Can

I remember playing “Kick the Can” as a child. For those of you who may never have played this game, especially young folks, it was played outdoors and usually after dark. There were no electronics or computers involved… just an old can.

The can was placed in the open, usually near a floodlight, so everyone could see it. All the players would go hide and the person who was “it” would go look for them. Once spotted, the race was on to see whether “it” or the person they found reached the can first and kicked it. Whoever kicked the can would be safe and the other person would be “it”.

It is amazing how much of an adrenaline rush one would get in the attempt to reach safety by trying to kick the can first. In all these years that have passed, I may have forgotten the exact rules, but the point I am going for is the idea of the extreme desire to be “safe”. Kids would run full bore through the dark and unseen obstacles to reach safety first.

As Christians, our safety is found in the Lord. Run to him and let him gather you into his arms. He will protect you and keep you safe. Come out of the dark where you have been hiding and run into the light where he is waiting to draw you to himself.

Psalms 91:2 (NLT) - “This I declare about the LORD: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.”
