We all need a safe space to run to when we sense that we are in danger, whether it’s from a physical, spiritual, or emotional danger. When we’re children, it’s usually our parents that we run to for any type of danger. In the south, we have storm cellars for tornadoes we can run to and big cities on the coast often have hurricane shelters.
The tendency, at the moment of impact from a perceived danger, is to seek refuge from a person or a man-made shelter. When all else fails, we may cry out to God to save us. We fear the thing that is threatening us and try to save ourselves or rely on someone else to save us. But we have Jesus, who is our Savior!
We should have an established relationship with God before disaster strikes so that we will know who our refuge is. Then our first instinct will be to cry out to him in moments when we need refuge. A lot of deal-making goes on during disasters when there are no other options. “God, if you’ll save me, then I’ll go to church!” That’s foxhole salvation. That may not actually get you saved, but my point is to have a relationship with him now.
Do you have a place of refuge? Make God your refuge first and plan for natural places of refuge from worldly disasters. Let God guide you through wisdom and his Word. Then peace will rule and reign in your heart!
Psalms 91:2 (NLT) - “This I declare about the LORD: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.”
