Being Your Own Worst Critic

We all hate to be criticized and get very angry when others point out our flaws or mistakes, even if it is constructive criticism. It hurts to be told that you are wrong or flawed in some way, especially if it is true. Yet, we are often our own worst critic and we may even be over-critical, casting a dark shadow of gloom everywhere we go.

When we reach the point of being self-deprecating, we are no longer fun to be around and can bring others down with us. Throwing a pity party and spreading your negativity about yourself to anyone who will listen only serves to feed your self doubts and pull you deeper into a dark pit of despair.

Instead, try turning that all around and learning from it. Remember who created you and that he has a purpose and plan for you. He made you just the way you are and you are not a mistake. Take whatever abilities, talents, and gifts you have and run with it. When you stumble, get up and try again. If criticism is constructive, use it… if it is harmful, ignore it and move on.

Self-evaluate the things you do, but do not tear yourself down. Examine your heart and your motives, keep them pure, and carry out what God has called you to do. Encourage others and be encouraged!

Psalms 37:3 (TPT) - “Keep trusting in the Lord and do what is right in his eyes. Fix your heart on the promises of God and you will be secure, feasting on his faithfulness.”
