Having spent an entire career in law enforcement, I know a bit about this subject. A character witness is someone who can testify about the content of the character of someone, whether good or bad. A defense attorney will call upon friends, relatives, coworkers, etc. to testify to the best traits, attributes, or contributions to whatever environment they have observed the defendant in first hand. A prosecutor will bring in witnesses who can testify to a defendant’s bad behavior or character traits that they have personally witnessed.
As Christians, we are, in a sense, called upon to be character witnesses for Christ. We testify about all that Christ has done for us… the things we have seen him do in our life and the lives of others. We tell about his perfect character and his love for all the world. He is the spotless and flawless lamb that was sacrificed for all. He, who knew no sin, took our sins upon himself, and sacrificed himself to save us from our sins so that, if we believe in him, we will be saved.
Jesus does not need defending, he only wants us to testify about him. Remember that, even though God sent his Son into the world to save it, not to judge it, he is the one and only judge and we will all go before him to be judged. So receive his Son today and testify about him to all the world!
1 John 1:3 (NLT) - “We proclaim to you what we ourselves have actually seen and heard so that you may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.”
