What is Your Idea of God?

It doesn’t really matter, does it? I’m absolutely sure you would be wrong… and so would I. C.S. Lewis said, “I want God, not my idea of God.” It’s why we have so many different religions and denominations. People think they have him figured out and have put him in their box of what they think he is like. So they convince enough people of the same thing and join together with a common belief to form a body of “believers”. This isn’t bad, depending on what or who they are believing in!

My point isn’t to argue against churches and denominations. In fact, I fully support them. I belong to one and I know God calls us to fellowship with one another. It is the great I AM that we are worshiping that is the center of my point today. I have lived so much of my life trying to put him in my box, to fit him into my lifestyle, so that I could live my life the way I want to and still, somehow, please him.

Instead, my focus should be on living to please him and build my life around that. I’ve always had it backwards. My mind cannot fathom the awesomeness of our eternal Father, his infinite wisdom, and his glorious grace. Why does the Creator even care about me and love me? That is mind blowing. My idea of God falls way short of all that he is. I want God!

Isaiah 12:3-5 (NLT) - With joy you will drink deeply from the fountain of salvation! In that wonderful day you will sing: “Thank the LORD! Praise his name! Tell the nations what he has done. Let them know how mighty he is! Sing to the LORD, for he has done wonderful things. Make known his praise around the world.”
