Remember when the teachers of religious law brought a woman that had been caught in the act of adultery to Jesus? They were actually trying to trap Him into saying something that they could use against Him. They quoted the law of Moses that says she must be stoned. Jesus saw through their trap and simply knelt down and started writing in the dust with His finger. I would love to know what He wrote, wouldn’t you?
Perhaps it was a list of their sins, because when He stood up and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone,” He stooped down again and wrote some more in the dust. They disappeared one by one until Jesus was left alone with the woman. Finally, He asked her if there was even one of her accusers left to condemn her. When she answered no, He said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”
This tells me that I shouldn’t judge others while I am carrying unrepentant sin within me. I can’t cast stones or condemn others, because I’m a sinner just as they are. Maybe I’m not committing the same sin, but I am a sinner just the same. Repent of your sins and know that Jesus would give you the same instruction. Go and sin no more.
John 8:10-11 (NLT) - Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?” “No, Lord,” she said. And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”
