The Hurrieder I Go The Behinder I Get
I first saw this grammatically incorrect saying on a sign in a Stuckey's roadside store when I was probably six or seven years old. Do you remember when those lined the highways across the U. S.? You could fill up your car, buy something to eat, and shop for souvenirs.
Even as a child growing up in the 60's and 70's it seemed that we were hustling and bustling around at a fast pace. That pales in comparison to today's supersonic, technologically charged lifestyle!
There's an old Alabama song (remember them?) called "I'm in a Hurry" that goes:
I'm in a hurry to get things done
Oh I rush and rush until life's no fun
All I really gotta do is live and die
But I'm in a hurry and don't know why.
The point I take from "the hurrieder I go the behinder I get" is that the more we rush through life with all of our busyness we will get behind on all the things that really matter. We need to slow down on the highways of life, take breaks to fuel up, recharge, and browse through Stuckeys so we don't miss a few of the gems hidden there for us to discover.
