I Want To Do Good

I love observing toddlers now that mine are grown and have their own, especially when they are testing their boundaries. You have seen a young child reach for something they know they are not supposed to touch, while looking at you out of the corner of their eye to see if you are watching them. Sometimes they will even grin at you while they are doing it!

I suspect that you are a lot like me. I often do things that I know are wrong, knowing God is watching me, and I do it anyway. Just like the toddler in my example, I think that if I smile or just say I'm sorry, I can get away with it. If I just did that once, or even rarely, that might be okay. But throughout my lifetime, I hate to admit, I have done that over and over again.

Why do we behave that way? The seventeenth verse of Galatians 15 tells us, "The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions."

We have to overcome our sinful desires when we belong to Jesus. Allow the Spirit to direct your life and he will help you conquer your sinful ways. Thankfully we have a gracious and merciful God who loves us and forgives us each and every time!

Galatians 5:24 (NLT) - "Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there."
