Yo-yos

Yo-yos are crazy little toys that were designed many years ago to tie strings into knots that were impossible to untie. They are also designed to hit you in various body parts, mostly the head, when you try to get fancy with them. This is usually when people start calling you a yo-yo instead of the toy. It is even the term for describing when someone is on and off of their diet plan, called yo-yo dieting.

I suppose it could be used for exercising as well. I am a yo-yo runner and weight lifter. I don’t do those things consistently at all. I am not, however, a yo-yo believer in Christ. It is my hope and practice not to appear to others to be a yo-yo believer. I confess that, like everyone, I am a sinner and have a constant need to go to the Father for forgiveness, but that is not being a yo-yo. That is part of the walk of every believer.

An example of a yo-yo Christian, by my definition, is one who would profess Christ when things are going well, but would blame God when things go wrong. Or maybe someone whose behavior is Christ-like around fellow believers, but their behavior mimics the crowd they are spending time with doing things that would not please God. He wants us to be consistent in our walk with him and not ashamed to let our light shine before others.

So, don’t be a yo-yo Christian. And if you play with yo-yos (the toy), just be careful. They can be cruel!

Luke 9:26 (NLT) - “If anyone is ashamed of me and my message, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in his glory and in the glory of the Father and the holy angels.”
