I was thinking about how the morals of our society have changed drastically from what they were when I was growing up. I’m sure my father has witnessed an even greater change in his lifetime, since he was born in 1925. Sure, each generation has committed its own immoral acts and we all have fallen short of God’s glorious standard and sin. Technology has simply made access to all things, good or bad, easier and the spread of our cause just a matter of a few clicks on our cell phones.
I’m reminded of the analogy of the frog and the kettle of water. If you put a frog in a kettle of water and slowly turn up the heat until it boils, he won’t jump out and will eventually boil to death. However, if you throw him into a kettle of hot water, he’ll immediately jump out.
Imagine the dramatic changes in morality from the early days of television to today, for example. It was a slow burn going from shows, like the “Dick Van Dyke Show”, where the married couple’s bedroom scenes showed them wearing long-legged, long-sleeved pajamas and sleeping in twin beds to today’s shows, like just about any show, where any sex or gender are sleeping together nude in the same bed and the scenes get very explicit.
Had these changes in television taken place overnight, society would not have allowed it. No, it was a long, gradual, and calculated process that loosened the moral fabric of our society as we let our spiritual guard down and our focus shifted from God to self. It looked good and felt good, so we went with it. The family unit broke down and so did church attendance. The enemy slowly turned up the heat instead of bringing it to an instant boil. The church sat there as the heat slowly increased.
It is time for the church to return to God and wake up. Let’s reset our moral compass to true north and focus on God. Return to him and don’t get burned!
2 Chronicles 7:14 (NLT) - “Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.”
