I’ve talked about how important it is to guard our eyes in order to protect ourselves from what we see. It’s the things we don’t see that can be just as equally important. Make eye contact with people when you talk to them, especially children. And most important of all… your children.
When our kids are babies we examine every inch of their amazing little bodies and constantly stare into their cute little faces. But somewhere along the way, as they grow up, we tend to lose the skill of making eye contact with them. We become distracted by other things and look away while they are talking to us. Make it a habit to look into the eyes of your children, even when they are teens or adults. That shows how much you care about what they are saying. It also allows you to read their faces and see what is behind their words.
Practice this with everyone you speak with and you will be amazed at how much your perspective will change about that person. You extend value and worth when your focus is on them. I admit that my mind often wanders and skips to the next task on my schedule when I’m talking to people. When I remember to keep eye contact it helps me stay focused on that conversation.
For the same reason, you need to find a quiet place to be alone and pray. Prayer is simply a conversation with God and a quiet place allows you to hear from him with no distractions. Be still and quiet, listen for his voice to speak to your heart. Offer your prayers and petitions to him and he will hear you. Stay focused on him!
Jude 1:25 (NLT) - “All glory to him who alone is God, our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord. All glory, majesty, power, and authority are his before all time, and in the present, and beyond all time! Amen.”
