More Honor

My parents married on this day in 1950. Today would be their 69th wedding anniversary. I honored my 93-year old father yesterday for Father’s Day. My mother went on to be with the Lord almost nine years ago. Even though they are physically apart, the love my father still shows for her shines bright today.

Separately, they were powerful examples of what a man and a woman of God should look like and together they demonstrated what a strong, Christ-centered marriage looks like. Their anniversary floods my mind with a host of wonderful memories and it makes me sit here and chuckle when I think of some of the fun and hilarity we had together as a family. Sure, there were tough times mixed in with the good times, but they are greatly overshadowed by the best times.

We all have a choice to dwell on either the positive aspects of our life or the negative ones. You can dig up old, negative hurts and pains and put your focus on those things, or you can choose to concentrate on those good times and events that brought you happiness and joy. We learn from mistakes and bad experiences, but we move forward and reap the benefits that come through the results of a relationship that you are invested in. Our parents invested in us and loved us unconditionally. That’s why we will forever look back on our family memories with smiles and laughter in our hearts.

Ephesians 6:2-3 (NLT) - “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise: If you honor your father and mother, “things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.”
