We all have our individual routines. As I sit here day after day with my father and observe his, I am struck by and sometimes humored by his daily activities. He truly is a creature of habit. They start from the time he wakes up until he turns out the light to go to bed. I will exercise discretion and not reveal what they are but I can easily predict much of what he will do and sometimes what he will say in certain situations. Now that he is 97-years-old he is set in his ways and does not like to have his routines interrupted, even when it is necessary.
One of our Arkansas storms knocked his power out for several days and he had to relocate to my brother’s house until it was restored. We had to talk him out of staying in his cold, dark house until power was restored. His routines were thrown way off. I am pretty much the same way and I suspect that you are as well. Routines are good and keep us on track. I have found as I get older that it helps to remember (read not forget) things. If you throw me off my routine it could mess up my whole day. There are some routines or habits that can be bad for us, so it’s important to review them and evaluate their worth to your health and well being.
The most important routine that I inserted into the beginning of my day a long time ago is my devotions. If I don’t do that to start my day off it may not get done. It pleases God when you put him first. Break out your Bible and spend time praying and seeking him. He will speak to you and guide your day if you allow him. Give yourself the freedom to go outside your routines during the day and talk to God at random moments. Thank him and praise him for who he is and for all he has done for you!
