On My Honor

An enormous part of my youth was spent in the Scouting program, from Webelos to Boy Scouts to Explorers. I am an Eagle Scout which is one of my proudest achievements. I have taken three oaths in my life, starting with the Scout Oath: “On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.”

On my honor really strikes a chord with me. What am I if I have no honor? If I am not a man of my word then I cannot be trusted. I served in the Marine Corps and received an honorable discharge. That means the characterization of my service was honorable. A judge is given the title of “Your Honor,” meaning that he or she is deserving of respect and honor. Honor is held in high regard by God and by man.

We are to honor the Lord above all others for His glory and splendor. He is the name above all names. He is the only one worthy of all praise and honor and glory. And yet God created us, called us by name, and chose us as His own. Honor Him by being honorable.

Psalms 29:2 (NLT) - “Honor the Lord for the glory of his name. Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.”
