My home town experienced a powerful straight line wind blast a couple of days ago. The strong, steady winds and rain knocked down trees and damaged homes in its path. I was here two or three years ago when that same type of storm blew a large pine tree down onto my father’s house. Its roots were not deep enough to defend against the mighty winds blowing against it.
Having witnessed the tree falling on the house I am keenly aware of the other tall pines surrounding my father’s house. The more recent storm reinforced my awareness and reminded me of the importance of deep roots. It takes the right combination of soil, water, and nutrients for roots to grow strong and deep. A deeply rooted tree is able to better withstand the storms that rage against it.
This same principle is true when applied to our spiritual life. We must be deeply rooted in Christ to withstand the storms launched against us by the devil. Our spiritual roots grow deep when we plant ourselves in the good soil of fellowship with other believers, receive nourishment from prayer and devotion to God, and are watered by His Word. Then we will be able to stand against the storms of life.
Colossians 2:6-7 (NLT) - “And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.”
