Road trips are fun and exciting times. The short day trips to nearby destinations can be less tiring and an enjoyable day for a relaxing drive with others. Cross-country road-trips, with the expressed purpose of stopping along the way to explore the innumerable things there are to see in this beautiful country of ours, are an entirely different matter. Those call for a little more advanced planning and expense, but create lasting memories and stories that you will talk about forever.
Whether it’s with your spouse or family, another couple, or a group of friends, road trips are fun adventures. Although the destination certainly contributes to how high the fun meter registers, the process of getting there can sometimes be just as entertaining and enjoyable. That’s usually where most of the conversation and hilarity takes place, since you’re trapped in a confined space together for the length of the trip. Too long of a trip can test the limits of your friendship as well!
The ultimate road trip was a walking road trip. The thing that made it the ultimate road trip was that two of Jesus’ followers started out walking the seven miles from Jerusalem to the village of Emmaus. This was after the crucifixion and they were suddenly joined by Jesus, but God prevented them from recognizing him. He spent the time explaining all the Scriptures concerning himself. When they reached Emmaus, they invited him to stay the night with them. Imagine their surprise when, as they sat down to eat and he took the bread and blessed it, their eyes were opened and they saw who he was!
Who would not have loved being on that road trip? This truly was the ultimate road trip!
Luke 24:13-16 (NLT) - “That same day two of Jesus’ followers were walking to the village of Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem. As they walked along they were talking about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus himself suddenly came and began walking with them. But God kept them from recognizing him.”
