I don’t know who is displaying it, but there is one place along my commuting route that I pass every day that I see the American flag. It’s still dark outside when I’m driving in, so the flag is beautifully lit by spotlights as is appropriate and befitting for Old Glory. Today, the wind was blowing at the perfect velocity for the flag to fly in all its full glory and splendor. The lights amplified its beautiful red, white, and blue colors as it waved to all who passed by. I wanted to salute it, but reality set in and I returned my attention to the road before me.
Almost immediately, the song You’re a Grand Ol’ Flag popped into my head. This made me ponder all of the patriotic songs that we used to learn and sing in school when I was a child. I wonder if they still learn them in school today. America the Beautiful was one of my favorites. Maybe it’s because of my military background, but I still get emotional when I hear the Star Spangled Banner and, yes, I do stand at attention and put my hand on my heart.
We may be going through some tough times right now, but we have before and we will again. It’s still the greatest country in the world and I’m proud to be an American, which reminds me of another song.
