I always knew when I was in big trouble when my mother called me by my first and middle name. That was never a good thing. I always envied my friends that only had a first name and no middle name. I don’t know how they could ever be in trouble without the dreaded middle name. Or maybe they had it worse because they would have no warning that trouble was brewing for them.
I certainly don’t want my actions to cause God to call me by my first and middle name! I’m sure I have done things that would cause him to want to. Just as when our parents would call out our names and we would know exactly what we had done wrong, God gives us the Holy Spirit to let us know when we have strayed. It’s that loving tug on our consciences that leads us to repentance for our sins.
