Wazers

Waze, for those of you who aren’t familiar, is a navigational app. As a “Wazer”, it has steered me around countless traffic snarls in Los Angeles during my daily commute to and from work. It can be an awesome tool to find your way to unfamiliar addresses, but I use it every workday to monitor traffic during my commute.

Waze wants you to be safe, so it has a warning that pops up that won’t allow you to access it while the car is moving if you are the driver. I almost had a wreck once trying to read that as I lied and clicked the “I am a passenger” button so I could use it. Come on… you’ve all done that! Anyone familiar with the app knows that you can turn off some of the more annoying features or alerts that you don’t want to hear. Alerts only come up when Wazers report them and I can always tell the cars that have a bored passenger when I hear “Pothole reported ahead” every 30 seconds or “Police reported ahead” or “Road work reported ahead”.

Pothole warnings in LA are annoying and you can’t turn that off without turning off all the alerts. They should only have a “no potholes” warning. It would be much less annoying or frequent. My favorite alert in LA is “Watch out! Road kill reported ahead!” Around here it’s usually a skunk and an alert is definitely not needed. I think that feature should be disabled back home where I come from. Otherwise the alert would be followed by “Watch out! Car stopped on road ahead!”

There are times when I have chosen not to believe the warnings and continued on my chosen route because I was convinced my way had to be better. I was given several chances to alter my course and choose a better way even though I was reminded repeatedly to turn around and go another way. I always paid a price for that. God gives us warnings and allows us to make our own choices as well. We have to decide whether we listen to him and follow the path he has chosen for us or go our own way. Choose his way every time and you won’t go wrong!
