When I was a child, we used to get gasoline at the “filling station” or fillin’ station as we pronounced it down south. Maybe that was just a southern thang or maybe it was a common term back then, but that’s what we called it. If your car or gas can was empty, you took it there to fill it. So it just made sense to me to call it the filling station.
While you were there, they would fill your car, check your oil and tires, and clean your windshield for you as a courtesy… no extra charge! Later, they added it as an extra charge. Remember full service and self-service pumps? Now, with the exception of a couple of states that don’t allow you to pump your own gas, you have to do everything yourself.
I go to a different kind of a filling station every day. It’s called the Bible. Just like it’s a good idea to stop at the filling station in your car before you run out of gas, it’s a good idea to top off every day by reading God’s Word and keeping your tank full. You never want to run out of spiritual gas on life’s highway. You never know who the enemy might send along to give you a ride to the next filling station. Hey, that would be a cool name for a church!
