The average church attendee sees the worship team leading a few songs and the pastor preaching at the pulpit each service. I’m certain most people realize there are things that happen beyond the pulpit that support these leaders, but don’t realize just how much work and personal sacrifice is involved and how many people it takes.
These are individuals who are called and committed to serving the body of Christ. Most are either unpaid volunteers or staff members who are paid small salaries or stipends to support the ministries of the church. There is a requirement for teachers and assistants for babies, children, and youth. These workers have to pass background checks to ensure the safety of your kids and for liability purposes. There are council members that oversee the finances of the church, administrative personnel to run the church, and overseers or elders to cover the pastoral staff and congregation with prayer, wisdom, and guidance.
You can never show too much love and appreciation for your pastors. You should pray for them daily, see to it that all their needs are met, and take every opportunity to demonstrate your love and appreciation for all that they do. Being a pastor is not a two day per week job. It is often a six or seven day a week calling and most pastors make themselves available 24/7. Never assume that they know you love them and appreciate them. Tell them often and show them by your actions and support by being active in one or more of the various ministries. There is a lot of vital work to be done for Christ beyond the pulpit!
Matthew 9:37 (NLT) - He said to his disciples, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few.”
