I’m late on posting my blog because I spent much of today with a great friend. His daughter’s house was one of many that was destroyed by Friday’s tornado in Little Rock. He spoke of numerous stories about, not only family and friends, but strangers as well, showing up and helping with the cleanup and recovery process. He said that his faith in humanity has been restored and I could tell that it touched his heart.
Natural disasters tend to bring out the best in people. They show up in great numbers, not for money or recognition, but because it is the right thing to do. Disasters are the great equalizer and show no favoritism. Likewise, there is no typical good Samaritan that shows up to help their neighbor. People from all walks of life pitch in to help others.
Jesus tells us to love our neighbor as much as we love ourselves. Last Friday was a great example of people living out that principle. We should do this in our everyday life. Always be prepared to lend a helping hand to others. You may be the victim of a disaster today or you may be the hand God uses to help a victim tomorrow. Do to others as you would have them do to you.
Matthew 22:39 (NLT) - A second is equally important: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
