The Golden Rule

I am sure you have heard the Golden Rule of “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Can you imagine the world if society followed that rule? There would be no crime, wars, divorces, poverty, or any other form of evil you could think of. Of course that is not reality because of our sinful nature.

All too often our attitude has been more like Sergeant Stan Jablonski on the old 1990’s TV series Hill Street Blues, “Let’s do it to them before they do it to us.” The decision to treat others the way we want to be treated or hurt someone before they hurt us may be a conscious, calculated one or it may be made spontaneously or subconsciously.

The fact that God emphasizes which choice we should make should make our decision a no-brainer. The Golden Rule, if followed, automatically keeps us from breaking the Ten Commandments. Love for our neighbor naturally follows as well. Let’s all commit to putting others before ourselves and treating others the way we want to be treated.

Matthew 7:12 (NLT) - “Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.”
