My daughter just texted me a picture of my grandson in his Cub Scout uniform. He was grinning from ear to ear and so proud of it. I am really proud of him because I spent about 12 years of my young life in Boy Scouts. It was such an important part of shaping me into who I am today. The troop that I was a part of was led by an amazing man that I looked up to and respected for all my life. We had a very active troop and he taught us so much. The scouting program is so good for youth, but it is only as good as the leaders who volunteer their time and talent. We had one of best as our Scoutmaster!
I worked my way up the ladder and earned the title of an Eagle Scout. It’s an honor that I am proud of to this day. It goes on all my resumes and carries a lot of weight. I can’t wait to sit down and talk with my grandson about my days as a Scout and swap stories with him as he participates with his friends. If he sticks with it and loves it half as much as I did, he will make so many wonderful memories and develop skills and tools that he will take with him into adulthood.
I have to go off on an unexpected tangent to boast about my grandson. This young man is so bright and smart. He definitely got that from his parents, but he got his good looks from his granddaddy. Okay, that was from his parents, too. But I love to watch him working with his hands, whether it’s assembling a Lego toy, working on an art project, or building a model car or airplane. I can see the concentration on his face and almost feel the gears in his head turning as he learns things and tries to figure out what makes them work. My favorite part is that his brilliant mind is placed inside a body with a beautiful, compassionate heart. I love this boy so much and I cannot wait to see what God has in store for his future!
