What comes to your mind when you hear or say the word precious? My first thought goes to my wife because that’s what I call her… a lot. She is the most precious thing to me in this world and I don’t say it lightly. My children and grandchildren, too. Those are the ones that I hold closest to my heart. Webster’s defines precious as something of great value or high price; highly esteemed or cherished; excessively refined.
Often we deem some of our possessions as precious. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing as long as it doesn’t consume our every thought and control our emotions. Take a classic car, for example. If you pour all of your spare time and money into it to the neglect of your family and other obligations at home, then you are robbing them of valuable time with you and possibly important resources needed elsewhere. There are many other examples as well.
Jesus should be our most precious treasure. We should value him and time spent with him above all else. If we seek him first, and his kingdom, then all else will be fall into proper alignment for us. Keep him first of all, make your family more precious than your possessions, and all else will be in focus. Then your time on earth will indeed be precious!
Psalms 72:14 (NLT) - “How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered!”
